Vienna Christmas Markets (photo-report) December 9, 2008

For someone like me, who grew up far from any religious traditions, the Christmas celebration in Europe has in the first line a cultural and even artistic value -although I guess that for many so called Christians it is almost the same.

One of the most charming Christmas tradition I enjoy in Vienna is a Christmas market, also known as Christkindlmarkt, Christkindlesmarkt, Christkindlmarket, and Weihnachtsmarkt (in German). Such street market is associated with the celebration of Christmas during advent, mainly the four weeks preceding Christmas Day. These markets originated in Germany and Austria but are now being held in many other countries.

I went photo-hunting and now I am happy to share with you some lovely pictures, showing so many colours that you normally never see in a European city:) … I sometimes had a feeling of being in India…

ENJOY!

P.S. swaps, sorry, it was not snowing this time…:(

Frankfurt – the City of Men (photo-report) September 6, 2008

When I saw the streets of Istanbul or New Delhi being male-dominated, I could  explaine it with religious or cultural reasons. At my first look at the City of Frankfurt I was astonished to notice more men than women on the streets – I would say in correlation of 60/40 or even 70/30! Where all the ladies of Frankfurt  are- sitting at home? Sitting in the office? Or may be they simply avoid this male domain of business (Frankfurt is famous for being the finance centre of Germany)? Unfortunately I could not find any statistics, but my small photo-report may depict it much better.

What I saw in Frankfurt is that 1) it is the city of men, 2) it is designed by and for men. Now the photo-facts:

THE MARKETING TARGET GROUP IS MALE:

The only one huge poster on one side on the shopping street is for men – in Vienna the same shop (Douglas) uses only sexy posters of Heidi Klum selling perfume or make up for women.

Surprisingly there are not many ad-boards in Frankfurt (in comparison to the ads-overloaded Vienna), and another huge one I saw was a Rolex ad – of course, by a male model! (more…)

Vienna in Football fever + Russia Champion (slideshow) June 23, 2008

Here is a slide-show of my expressions from the Saturday night in Vienna City – the night when the Russian team won over the Dutch. It was so unexpected for everyone, that we could not even buy any Russian flag (!) – the shops had nothing to offer! Because the play was not in Vienna, there have been very few Russian fans on the street. But many disappointed Dutch ones.

What is really positive about the whole the mega-football Party in Vienna is that it goes on rather peaceful and joyful, not as aggressive as expected. I guess that the beauty and peace of Vienna itself has that great impact on people. Enjoy the slide-show!

P.S: I learned from a reliable source that Russia will not only get to the final, but also become the Champion! 🙂

Vienna waits in fear for UEFA euro2008 (slideshow) June 6, 2008

IT IS COMING! – the ultimate nightmare of the cosy Vienna citizens: The UEFA Cup 2008, starting on the 7th of June…

The big and small businesses pray for the profit, the rest of the population prays for peace and order 🙂

Austria is famous for the its calm character. Austrians can not stand any disturbing noise or actions. Presently there are hot discussion going on in the Austrian media and Internet about THE BAN ON MOBILE PHONES ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT (apparently most Austrians feel annoyed by the constant buzz and passengers sharing their privat secrets in buses and trams) – and in fact the Austrian city of Graz has already issued such a ban (!). It is said to be the first such case in the world.

Now imagine how a regular Austrian must feel about the wild crowds of most probably drunk uncontrollable fans in the beautiful and neat city of Vienna, that icon of peace and charm??? Most of the people I know are terrified by just thinking of it. Sitting rather far from the so called FAN ZONE I can hear already now (about midnight) the screams and shouts of the arriving fans…brrr…scary… (more…)
