The spirit of play is older than culture itself – HOMO LUDENS June 22, 2008

The most fascinating and profound studies on play I found by the Dutch lingusit and historian Johan Huizinga (1872-1945). He was one of the founders of modern cultural history, started out as a student of Comparative linguistics, gaining a good command of Sanskrit. He wrote his doctoral thesis on the role of the jester in Indian drama. Huizinga had an aesthetic approach to history, where art and spectacle played an important part. His most famous work is The Autumn of the Middle Ages (a.k.a. The Waning of the Middle Ages). interestingly, he reinterprets the later Middle Ages as a period of pessimism and decadence rather than rebirth.

In his book Homo Ludens: A Study of the Play-Element in Culture Huizinga argues that play is one of fundamental drivers of human life, and is at the root of poetry, music, philosophy – even jurisprudence and war. (more…)

I did it! – I watched the match Russia-Sweden on TV June 19, 2008

I really watched the match! 🙂 For someone who does not watch TV since years it is really something special. I used to watch football some years ago, so I basically know what it is about. Not every play is captivating, some are really boring. This time I was lucky enough to enjoy a good play – the young Russian team was fast and successful.

Austria is in football mood now – I would not say that Austrians are great fans and keen on that thing, but marketing and PR people are doing a their job and the crowd is being brain washed to participate and buy all sorts of products in connection with that. At some point it gets too much…

Now let me use this topic and share my thoughts on football.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT FOOTBALL: watching a play, following the ball attentively one gets thoughtless. that is almost like a mediation. It is a great effect. Apart from that one is not alone and is kind of connected to millions of others watching it at the same time. Thus, football is a kind of a collective mediation.:)

WHAT I DO NOT LIKE ABOUT FOOTBALL: (more…)

UEFA Cup 2008, Austria vs. Germany June 16, 2008

Tonight there was a football battle between Austria and Germany. The Austrian media tried their best to blow the air up and mobilize the Austrian fans against the Germans. That was really too much of hatred!

At the same time when the play was going on, I took a stroll around on of the most beautiful Vienna parks – Belvedere – and shot some photos… The air was so very much peaceful and the sky was pink-golden…

Can you imagine that just some km away from that place the emotions-charged football play between the arch-rivals Germany and Austria took place?

LOVE; axinia
