Why do people shout at each other when they are upset? March 10, 2009

A saint asked his disciples, ‘Why do we shout in anger? Why do people shout at each other when they are upset?’
Disciples thought for a while, one of them said, ‘Because we lose our calm, we shout for that.’
‘But, why to shout when the other person is just next to you?’ asked the saint. ‘Isn’t it possible to speak to him or her with a soft voice? Why do you shout at a person when you’re angry?’
Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the saint.
Finally he explained, ‘When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each other through that great distance.’

Then the saint asked, ‘What happens when two people are in love with each other? They don’t shout at each other but talk softly, why? Because their hearts are very close. The distance between them is very small…’

The saint continued, ‘When they love each other even more, what happens?
They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their love. Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other and that’s all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.’

MORAL: When you argue do not let your hearts get distant, do not say words that distance each other more, else there will come a day when the distance is so great that you will not find the path to return.

Wow!!! What a beautiful explanation which i never heard before. But seems to be true. i think in anger we tend to lose our discrimination and senses also. Why do we get angry? because our ego is not satisfied and the opposite person is not behaving or responding according to our expectations.

The picture perfectly matches the content. highly professional photo and i love the picturisque. This is the best picture of yours. Axinia, if you do not mind and have no objection, can i have your email id?

Thanks, Sailaja, I love this photo too, it is so harmonious….I think one can feel the love and peace so well.

  3. Fabulous explanation, Axinia! I’ve never heard this before, but it makes perfect sense! But does it mean that anger is the opposite of love 😕

The photo is a true gem! Swaps, you’re an ace!

Hatred is the opposite to love. People get angry when they are not accepted for what they are, and what they say… Ego is the worst thing that shall never come in between two. shed “EGO” to love even your enemy…. I hope you agree…

“Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other and that’s all.”

That’s what we live for…the melody of silence.

  5. What a beautiful post, dear Axinia. Keep writing your peaceful, serene writings.
    Love!

Nice one Axinia. Though I’ve heard of this one before, it sounds different and even more beautiful coming from you.

I remember seeing a lot of couples in the generation previous to my parents doing that – just eye movements, gestures, postures and movements were sufficient for them. The husband & wife worked like the hands of a clock or wheels. Both doing equal & right things, at the right time, right moment and in the right manner. Beautiful. My maternal grandparents were like that.

My parents shout a lot. And my generation is there before you for you to see.

Certainly we have lost the art of life. Life has changed for the worse.

I need to tell that it is a really great article.. but it reminded me a movie “two for the road” .. sometimes this whisper, silence means a signal of downfall without noticing it ..

    • axinia Says:

Thank you, that is an intresting note…may be it happens sometimes, this downfall…actually I can even imagine that this happens rather often, especially in the West (where people are generally not really close to each other at hearts)…but still I think it is better than shouting.

    really nice

  14. Joanne Bevan Says:

I for one wish there were less shouting in this world. My teachers, schoolmates and even my family shouted at me for much of my youth for being introspective and for loving music. I swear, though, that I never intended to offend ANY of them.
