the only truth I know is my own experience

The Ego and the Super Ego July 21, 2007

Our ego is the means by which we make our way through life, without we would simply sit and vegetate. Our sense of “I”, our mental awareness of self and our drive to accomplish necessary tasks are all driven by the ego, and it is perfectly natural part of our human makeup.

However, problems can arise when we become too identified with this sense of I-ness. When this happens we become increasingly isolated from the world and begin to lose sight of our true relationship with the cosmic ocean in which we exist.

The super ego is that part of us which relates to our emotional makeup, in effect the home of our conditionings. As we mature, this subtle entity interacts with our ego to reinforce our prejudice and opinions. Without the work done by the super ego we would not be able to make full advantage of marvels of our memory, and so would have trouble making our way through the convoluted pathways of life.

This combination of experience and emotion provides much of the rich fabric of our personality.

However if we become excessively governed by this side of our person, we become unstable and maybe even prone to bouts of irrational behaviour.

Through meditation we can soothen down these two entities and bring about stability in the energy flows which feed them.
